Roberto De Simone (born August 25, 1933 in Naples ) is an Italian composer , theater man, author, opera director , musicologist , mythologist and ethnologist .

Life

In the 80s De Simone was artistic director of the Teatro di San Carlo and from 1995 to 2000 director of the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella in his hometown of Naples .

De Simone, who is mainly known abroad as an opera director ( Don Giovanni in Vienna, Macbeth in Munich, Nabucco in Milan, Cenerentola in Houston etc.), is a well-known and controversial figure in the contemporary cultural landscape in Italy. As early as the 1970s, the Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare (NCCP) , which he directed, achieved world fame with their revision of traditional music from southern Italy. De Simone's orientation towards musical theater found its strongest expression in the production 'La gatta Cenerentola', which premiered in Spoleto in 1976 with the participation of the NCCP and which achieved a legendary reputation. From the early 1980s De Simone worked regularly with the Neapolitan theater and music group Media Aetas and its founder and director Virgilio Villani, especially for music theater productions. His death in 2003, at the age of 54, marked the end of this symbiotic partnership, as Villani had played a formative role in the realization of De Simone's works for the stage. De Simone separated from Media Aetas in 2004 and has since worked with changing ensembles.
