Robertsganj ( Hindi : राबर्टसगंज , Urdu : رابرٹس گنج, Rābarṭsgañj; also Sonbhadra ) is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

The city is located around 90 kilometers south of Varanasi in the extreme southeast of Uttar Pradesh on the northern edge of the Kaimur Mountains and has 36,689 inhabitants (2011 census). Robertsganj is the administrative seat of Sonbhadra District .

Robertsganj is named after the British Field Marshal Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts ( ganj means "market" in Hindi and is a common part of place names).
