Robertsonpet is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka . The city is located in the east of the state and is approximately 94 km from Bangalore .

The city is part of the Kolar District . Robertsonpet has municipal council status . The city is divided into 41 wards .

history

Robertsonpet was founded in 1902 and named after Sir Donald Robertson , the British resident of the Princely State of Mysore . It is considered one of the first planned cities in modern India. The community was designed and built to accommodate the growing number of people employed in the Kolar Gold Fields , whose mines were producing gold . The town hall, popularly known as King George Hall, is lavishly built in Victorian style and has an impressive lawn and garden. Gold is no longer produced in the Kolar Gold Fields; instead, the facilities are used to generate energy.

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is 143,233 and that of the agglomeration is 162,230. Robertsonpet has a gender ratio of 1020 women per 1000 men and thus a rare surplus of women for India. The literacy rate was 91.7% in 2011. Almost 78% of the population are Hindus , approx. 12 are Christians , approx. 9% are Muslims and approx. 1% belong to another or no religion. Children under 6 years of age are 11.5% of the population. There is a sizable Anglo-Indian population who are descendants of the English mine overseers.
