Robin Murphy Williams

Robin Murphy Williams , Jr. (born October 11, 1914 in Hillsborough , North Carolina , † June 3, 2006 in Irvine , California ) was an American sociologist and the 48th president of the American Sociological Association .

Williams studied at the University of North Carolina and Harvard University , where he received his Ph.D. received his doctorate. As a professor of sociology, he taught at Cornell University and, well beyond his retirement , at the University of California, Irvine .

In 1967 Williams was elected to the American Philosophical Society , 1969 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and 1982 to the National Academy of Sciences .
