action

Sam Cahill is a Marines soldier and is preparing for his deployment to Afghanistan. Before he is transferred there, he picks up his little brother Tommy from prison, who was there and has just been released. Sam Cahill is bid farewell to his family with a joint dinner.

The helicopter carrying Sam Cahill is shot down in Afghanistan. Grace, Sam's wife, is brought the news of the death of her husband, whereupon she loses her courage to live. After Sam's memorial service, Tommy and his father quarrel because he thinks his son is a loser who has never succeeded in anything.

After a few low points, Tommy begins to look after his sister-in-law Grace and her children. He sets up the family kitchen and spends time with Grace and the children. The young woman is slowly regaining her courage and begins to come to terms with the loss of her husband. One evening, Grace and Tommy get close and kiss, but they are immediately ashamed.

Sam Cahill was not killed in the crash, but was captured by the Taliban together with a comrade and locked in a hole in the ground. The men are tortured; Sam is forced by the Taliban to kill his comrade.

Several weeks after the helicopter crash, the Taliban camp where Sam is being held is destroyed by US soldiers and Sam is freed. He returns to his family, but does not want to and cannot talk about what has happened. He has problems finding his way around in everyday life and accuses Grace of having slept with his brother, which she always denies. After a rage that ravages the kitchen, he draws a gun and threatens his brother with it. The police officers summoned try to calm Sam down - but Sam is still upset and shoots in the air. He finally pointed the gun at his head, but did not pull the trigger, was then arrested by the police and shortly thereafter admitted to a psychiatric institution. During a visit, Grace threatens to leave him if he does not talk to her about what happened in Afghanistan. He then tells her that he killed his comrade.

criticism

"'Brothers' turns out to be neither innovative (after all, it is a remake) nor a milestone in film history, but it is an above-average family drama ..."

- Filmrecommendation.com

"But even if 'Brothers' actually does everything right to be a first-class remake, you don't leave the cinema really enthusiastic."

- Nahaufnahme.ch

"The comparison between the original and the remake does result in stimulating observation perspectives, but these are not enough to justify the existence of Sheridan's disappointing film."

- critic.de

“In terms of remake […] BROTHERS sticks to the story, but gives the feeling more space to unfold and doesn't completely suffocate in the narrow social drama. Everyone has to decide for themselves whether this is better or not. The film was probably not necessary, but it's still good. "

- 2501.eu

"Because the great trio - Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire with their best acting performance to date - give this intense and sometimes painful drama an extraordinary depth."

- bummelkino.de

At Metacritic, the film achieved a Metascore of 61%. 62% of the film reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes are positive (as of December 2011).
