Johannes Heinrich Hubert Mohnen (born August 7, 1855 in Aldenhoven , † December 8, 1943 in Elbing ) was a West Prussian construction clerk . He is considered to be the initiator and architect of the redesign of the Kahlberg seaside resort .

Life

At the age of 29, Heinrich Mohnen went to study geodesy at the Agricultural University in Berlin to complete his training in the summer semester of 1885 . In the same semester he joined the geodetic-cultural-technical association chain , the later RSC-Corps Saxonia-Berlin. In the spring of 1887 he passed the surveyor's examination in Prussia at the examination commission in Berlin . After his first employment in 1887 at the Altona Railway Directorate and in 1888 at the dike office of the Great Marienburger Werder , where he created projects for the formation of cooperatives for irrigation and drainage after the great Vistula and Nogat floods , he became the district architect of the Elbing district on April 1st . He held this office, in which he was promoted to building officer, until his retirement on April 1, 1924.

During his tenure, the urban and rural community's artificial road network was significantly expanded. Despite the mountainous and sometimes very rugged Elbingen highlands, he planned and built a road network that was considered exemplary at the time when motorized road traffic was emerging in West Prussia . In 1921, as a representative of the municipal associations, he took part in negotiations with the East Prussian Works to build a power station . At the end of this, an electricity company was founded, and Heinrich Mohnen was appointed as head and chief executive officer. As early as October 1923, the Elbing District Electricity Plant was able to start delivering electricity after Mohnen provided intensive support for the construction work. In addition, Mohen was an arbitrator and expert in the field of land improvement . He published many articles on modern road construction in specialist journals.

Mohnen made the construction plans for the Haffuferbahn, which opened in 1899, on a voluntary basis . When he joined the supervisory board of the public limited company Seebad-Kahlberg in 1898, the redesign of the Baltic Sea resort of Kahlberg began, which had remained in the infrastructural and structural condition designed by George Wilhelm Härtel since the middle of the 19th century. In 1899 Mohnen was elected 2nd chairman and in 1903 1st chairman of the supervisory board. First, under his leadership, the old, one meter wide and 400 meter long wooden was Haffsteg by an equally long, but 12-meter wide pier replaced. According to his development plan, a paved road network was created, combined with significant earth movements. The Hotel Kaiserhof was built on the high ground. On the Höhenweg he initiated the construction of representative private villas and pensions, setting an example by building his own villa. He had a beach promenade built by the sea. Other construction measures included a hot water bath and the drinking water supply to all houses through a house water pipe system with an electrical turbine system.

As a board member and later honorary member of the Association of German Baltic Sea Baths and from October 23, 1906 as founder, 1st chairman and later honorary member of the East and West Prussian Baltic Sea Baths Association, he promoted tourism in Kahlberg in particular, among other things by plenty of cards and Travel guides with pictures. At the Ministry of Railways he managed to set up special holiday trains to East Prussia with a direct connection to Kahlberg. Furthermore, with the establishment of the Elbing-Kahlberger Dampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft, he achieved the establishment of a second water connection to Kahlberg. In agreement with the East German Railway Company , the Elbing- Tolkemit -Kahlberg line was set up. In 1911 he was a member of the National Committee of the International Congress for Thalassotherapy , which met in Kolberg .

Poppies was nine years as a member of the Municipal Council of the city of Elbing, where he spent five years as a city council to manage the Dezernats responsible for the housing office. The date of his death is not known. He must have died in the turmoil of World War II . Since 1894 he was married to Martha Clara Johanne Elisabeth Marie Wilczek, the daughter of the major and Marienburg district commander Paul Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Natalis Wilczek. Their only child, Hans Mohnen, died in 1918 at the age of 19 years and 2 months as a flag boy between Montdidier and Royon . In 1920 Heinrich Mohnen sold his villa in Kahlberg to the superior of the Sankt-Josefsheim in Elbing to establish a pastoral care center in Kahlberg, as he had lost the joy of this property after the death of his son. Heinrich Mohnen's wife was raped in February 1945 at the age of seventy-two while fleeing from Elbing to the west by members of the Red Army in ash booths. Her further fate is unknown.
