Rocca di Cerere

Rocca di Cerere ( Rock of the Ceres ) is a rock in the town of Enna in Sicily .

location

The rock is located on the northeast corner of Table Mountain , on which the old town of Enna is built, about 150 meters northeast of the Castello di Lombardia . A staircase carved into the rock leads to the flat, fenced top of the rock, which serves as a viewing platform. From here you have a good view of the castle and the old town of Enna, the city of Calascibetta opposite it on the other side of the valley in the north and the entire foreland to the east to Etna .

history

In ancient Greece, the sanctuary of the goddess Demeter was located on this rock , called Ceres by the Romans , from where the rock gets its current name. Around 173 BC Roman soldiers are said to have stolen the image of the goddess. Since then the sanctuary has fallen into disrepair. Except for a few traces of processing in the rock, nothing can be seen.

Geopark

The Rocca di Cerere Geopark is named after the rock and covers an area of around 1280 km² in the Enna Community Consortium .
