Alexander Alexandrovich Bednow ( Russian Александр Александрович Беднов ; Ukrainian Олександр Олександрович Беднов Oleksandr Oleksandrowitsch Bednow * 29. August 1969 in Luhansk , Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic , USSR ; † 1. January 2015 in Lutuhyne , Ukraine ), also known by the nom de guerre "Batman" (Бэтмен), was a rebel commander, leader of the pro-Russian " Batman Battalion " and statesman of the self-proclaimed and internationally not recognized People's Republic of Lugansk (VL).

biography

Bednow was born into a military family in Luhansk. Between 1988 and 1990 he served in the ranks of OMON , the Russian riot police in Armenia and Georgia . After the collapse of the Soviet Union , he worked in the Ukrainian Interior Ministry until 2006. After retiring, Bednow worked in the security service of a number of private companies.

With the outbreak of the civil revolution in Ukraine in late 2013 - early 2014 against President Viktor Yanukovych , Bednow joined the pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country. In April 2014 he formed a military unit of 12 fighters, from which the so-called Batman Battalion later emerged. Until the summer of 2014, his militias patrolled the separatist-controlled areas of the Luhansk region.

According to the public prosecutor of the VL, fighters of the Batman battalion, commanded by Bednow, tortured 13 civilians in Luhansk in June 2014, killing one of them. In addition, further cases of abuse of the local population are suspected. In addition, the investigative authorities of the VL assume that the Bednow unit was involved in the illegal seizure of private property and civil property.

Bednow acted briefly as Defense Minister of the VL from 14 to 27 August 2014. He was known for his uncompromising opposition to the Minsk Protocol and called for a complete "liberation" of the territory of the VL from the Ukrainian army .

On January 1, 2015, the Bednow military convoy got into a battle with the special forces of the Interior Ministry of the VL near the city of Lutuhyne. He and five of his combatants were killed. According to the General Prosecutor's Office of the VL, Bednow had refused to demand the laying down of arms and had put up strong resistance against the security forces. A few days earlier, criminal proceedings had been initiated against him and his colleagues. This development was preceded by the deterioration in the personal relationship between Bednow and Igor Wenediktowitsch Plotnitski , the Prime Minister of the VL. The members of the Batman battalion believe that Bednov was murdered on Plotnitski's personal orders in order to get rid of the unpopular militia leader.
