The Rocca di Villalago is a castle in the Italian municipality of Villalago in the province of L'Aquila .

history

tower

The hill fort in a strategic position on a hill above the Valle di Sagittario was used for defense and observation. Presumably it is of Lombard origin and from the 8th century. It also served as a prison.

Today the Museum of Art and Folklore of Villalago is housed in some rooms.

The building consisted of a defensive wall and a cylindrical keep for observation, which was about 10-12 meters high, crenellated and in the Romanesque style.

The defensive wall was partially replaced by residential buildings; today only the keep remains in good condition.

description

The Museo dei Mestieri della Rocca

It was opened in 2003 in the halls of the Baron Palace. It consists of a few halls in which information boards and faithful reproductions of old handicrafts of the place are exhibited. In particular, the work of the shepherds and their moves through Abruzzo is described. Then the trades of the fisherman and the miller are listed.

Baron Palace

It forms the main structure of the castle and was built in the Middle Ages . Today the museum described above is housed there. The palace has a square, irregular floor plan and is divided into two levels by a cornice . The windows are rectangular.

Medieval tower and oratory of Our Lady of Sorrows

The Lombard tower is the oldest part of the entire complex. It has a circular floor plan, a hut roof (similar to a pagoda ) and small windows to look out on. Below are ruins of a second tower that have been converted into a tourist lookout point. You can also visit the cylindrical tower.

In the vicinity of the tower are the remains of a medieval aristocratic chapel that belongs to the baron palace. The oratory of the Mater Dolorosa was built around the 14th century and shows traces of frescoes .
