Rochus Chapel in Ostbevern

The Rochus Chapel in Ostbevern im Kirchesch, at the corner of Westbeverner Strasse and Rochusstrasse, is a place of worship in Ostbevern. It has been a listed building since February 8, 1994.

description

The chapel was built in the neo-Gothic style with two side windows and an entrance door. Inside there are three saints: a large sandstone statue of the Virgin Mary rises above the altar; the mother of God is represented as the new Eve. To her right is a statue of Saint Roch , depicted as a pilgrim with a staff and canteen, the skin covered with plague bumps and accompanied by a dog. On the left is a statue of Saint Anthony of Padua . He carries the baby Jesus in his arms over a Franciscan robe and a lily.

history

A first, small chapel was probably built in half-timbered buildings during or after the Thirty Years War . In 1662 there was evidence of a plague procession on Rochustag (August 16). At this time, a chapel belonging to the Bevern house was likely to have stood in Kirchesch and was touched by the procession.

In 1683 the owner of the house of Bevern, Hermann Stephan Dietrich Freiherr von Büren zu Ringelstein von Schenkingh, canon and cantor in Münster, committed the respective pastor of Ostbevern to a holy mass twice a week (Tuesday and Saturday) by donating the interest of 300 Reichstalers in his will to read in honor of the Immaculate Conception of Mary and his salvation in the chapel. As early as 1656, a new priest, Heinrich Wosten from Telgte, was ordained a priest at the expense of "praenobilis Domini Schencking in Ostbevern" (of the noble Mr. Schencking from Ostbevern ) and became "Vicarius SS. Antonii et Catharinae" ( Vicar to St. Antonius and Katharina ) be ordered.

In 1732, the holy hermit Antonius the Great is mentioned as the patronage of the chapel, which is usually called the "Kapelle im Kirchesch" . Either this and Antonius of Padua, whose statue is in the chapel today, were confused or deliberately exchanged. In 1771, Saint Rochus was first mentioned as the church patron.

The number of Holy Masses to be celebrated according to the donation of 1683 was reduced to 80 per year in 1841 at the instigation of Pastor Heinrich Spithöver with episcopal approval, because the chapel was far away from the village and the Holy Masses took place without parish participation. The number was fixed at a monthly mass in 1842 and an annual mass from 1867 on Rochustag, August 16. In 1852 extensive renovation work was necessary. The small and dilapidated chapel was finally demolished at the end of the 19th century.

The current chapel was consecrated on July 10, 1895 with the approval of Pastor Koehler. Since 1842 at the latest, the chapel was the first blessing station in the Corpus Christi procession , which in Ostbevern - later than elsewhere - was only introduced at the beginning of the 19th century; at this time the annual plague procession was probably given up.
