history

House Bevern around 1637

The castle was named after the von Bevern family . These were enfeoffed with the place by the bishop in Münster . The Knights of Bevern were Drosten in Ostbevern; a function that they shared with the Lords of Loburg . Therefore, there were also several cases of disputes between the Schenking and the Nagel over the judiciary at this location. The foundation and construction of the parish church of St. Ambrosius can be traced back to her. In 1294 the "Nygenhof", the Niehof (new courtyard) can be traced as a so-called Dienstmannenburg . In 1367 a "hus tho Beveren" was also mentioned, and in 1372 a "borch to Beveren" was named for the feudal bearers. In the 15th century the castle was bequeathed to the von Vechtrup family, who owned it only for a short time and bequeathed it to the von Schencking or Schenckinck, who belonged to the hereditary families . When this family died out in 1707, Amalia von Reeden, widowed Baroness von Büren-Schencking, etc. a. House Bevern. Her daughter Antoinette married Maximilian Heidenreich Droste zu Vischering , to whom she a. a. House Bevern brought into the marriage. In 1803, through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , the bishopric of Münster was dissolved. Until 1809 the Bevern House was ruled. In 1810 Friedrich Clemens von Elverfeldt zu Dahlhausen and Steinhausen from the noble family Elverfeldt was named von Beverfoerde zu Werries Maire von Ostbevern. In 1810 the Département de l'Ems-Supérieur was established. The Vienna Congress of 1815 did not bring back the old legal relationships. With that the Bevern house lost its importance for the place. Only the prison was still in use. Up until the 1970s, a cloak of shame could still be seen in the basement .

description

Site plan of the house Bever

The castle was secured by an artificial flood and the Bever all around. It has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. Between 1827 and 1834, the now dilapidated castle was almost completely demolished. Only part of the outer bailey , the prison tower, which today serves as an archive tower and is privately owned, remained. The half-timbered house on the site was built later and was used as a forester's yard. An information column was set up in September 2011. The property is still owned by the von Droste zu Vischering family today .

The Rochus Chapel originally belonged to the Bevern family.
