An important sub-organization for Germany was the Abraham Lincoln Foundation (ALS), which during the Weimar period counted many outstanding scientists among its members, awarded scholarships to talented young professionals and generally wanted to promote democratic thought in education. There were also serious mistakes. From 1932 to 1935, the foundation financed, among other things, the twin research of Otmar Freiherr von Verschuer at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology, Human Heredity and Eugenics in Berlin. The National Socialist journalist Giselher Wirsing received an ALS scholarship for a longer stay in America when he was young. After his return he developed into one of the most aggressive anti-American in Nazi journalism, where he acted as an expert due to his trip. He kept this line for life, also later with Christ and the world .
The Bellagio Center
The foundation also owns and operates the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center at Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio , Italy. The property was bequeathed to the foundation in 1950. This includes the main building with one and two-room apartments, a library with an adjoining lounge, a breakfast room and dining room with a spacious outdoor terrace on a plot of approx. 200,000 m² on the tip of the peninsula on Lake Como . Small buildings in the forest with internet access are set up as research rooms for guests. In a second building complex directly on the lake, which was opened in September 2001, apartments and conference rooms are available to guests.
Both a conference and residency program will be conducted at the Bellagio Center. Humanities and natural scientists, artists, writers, musicians and politicians from all over the world can apply to the foundation for a stay of two to six weeks.
