history

Beginnings and advancement

The first Rocky Mountain Jamboree aired in 1959, which was very late for programs of this type. The show was the brainchild of bluegrass musician Buster Jenkins, who ran the program with his band, the Blue Grass Group . The Blue Grass Group was also the house band of the Jamborees. The show aired from 4th and Grant Streets in Denver. In 1962, a Rocky Mountain Jamborees concert was recorded to be released on disc.

The show's ensemble consisted of various regional musicians. The Blue Grass Group consisted of the following members: Gene Poole ( bass ), Bob Burgame ( guitar ), Buster Jenkins ( fiddle ), Betty Shubert (guitar) and Don Henningson ( steel guitar ). Other members of the show included Johnny Chase, Bill & Joyce, Roy Green, the Country Boys and Charlie Wagoner, who also acted as a presenter and was under contract with Linco Records. The star of the show was Gerry Butler, an Irishman who only lived in the States for a few years. In between, the show was loosened up with comedy from Bozo the Clown.

The End

In 1970 the last broadcast of the Rocky Mountain Jamborees was broadcast. Buster Jenkins gave up the show because he wanted to tour the US with a bluegrass band. Jenkins died in 2008.
