Rocky Pomerance
Rocky Pomerance , actually Arnold Pomerantz (born May 20, 1927 in New York City , † August 17, 1994 ) was an American police officer who, because of his de-escalation strategy, took part in the demonstrations at the Democratic and Republican National Convention in 1972 in Miami Beach achieved national fame.
life and work
Pomerance began his career as a simple police officer. In 1972, when two national conventions were held in Miami Beach, he was the head of the Police Department. After the riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Pomerance tried to prevent a similar bloodshed. Before the congresses, the police had to complete a course on conflict management lasting several weeks in order to prepare them for the rush of demonstrators. Despite some violent incidents and arrests, the demonstrations were largely uneventful compared to other national conventions. After the end of the conventions, Pomerance was celebrated as a national hero.
In 1975 he became chairman of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. On July 1, 1977, he resigned from the police force and started a private security company. He was married to the actress Hope Pomerance (1929-2006).
