Roger Broders (born March 2, 1883 in Paris , † October 20, 1953 there ) was a French illustrator and poster artist .

Life

In the 1920s and 1930s he designed posters for the French railway companies Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (PLM) and Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF) for their routes to the Côte d'Azur and advertised in the French Alps and the branch lines there. The PLM supported Broder's work by paying for his trips to the tourist areas. Another customer was the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL). Broders designed posters for CIWL's luxury trains , such as the Simplon-Orient-Express or the Taurus-Express .

Other works by Broder dealt with other tourist attractions, for example, on behalf of the Tunisian Tourism Association, his poster about the Golf de la Soukra Tunis from the 1930s.

In some of the books published by Pierre Lafitte with the experiences of the master thief Arsène Lupine in the 1920s and 1930s, Broder's illustrations can be found on the inside pages. In the 1940s, during the German occupation of France in World War II, he illustrated four works by Karl May that were published in French in Tours .

In 1950 the publishing house Mame in Tours published a volume with illustrations for Joan of Arc , which Broders created based on photos from the film of the same name with Ingrid Bergman .

Today his 100 or so posters are collectibles. In 2011 a volume of railway posters with images of various of his posters was published in Munich .
