Roger Elliott

Sir Roger James Elliott (born December 8, 1928 in Chesterfield - † April 16, 2018 ) was a British theoretical solid-state physicist .

Since 1957 he taught at the Oxford University in theoretical physics , first as a lecturer and since 1974 as a professor . He was retired in 1996. From 1988 to 1993 he was CEO of the science publisher Oxford University Press . His research focus was on the theory of solid state physics . His contributions to the theory of magnetism are particularly noteworthy. He has published four books and around 200 specialist articles.

He has received numerous awards, including the Maxwell Medal in 1968 and the Guthrie Medal from the Institute of Physics, as well as honorary doctorates from Paris , Bath and Essex . Elliott had been a member of the Royal Society since 1976 . In 1981 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 1987 he was ennobled as a Knight Bachelor and has since had the addition of "Sir".
