He received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1948. After completing his studies, he worked for the law firm Covington & Burling in Washington before the US Supreme Court and advised on international disputes.

In the 1950s, he married Carrie Fisher, with whom he has two sons, Eliot Fisher, Professor of Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School, and Peter R. Fisher , Secretary of the Treasury from 2001 to 2004 .

In 1958, Fisher accepted the call to Harvard Law School, where he initially taught as a lecturer and from 1960 until his retirement in 1992 as a professor. In 1963 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Shaped by the events of the war and his experience as a lawyer, Fisher began to research how conflicts can be resolved amicably. Fisher and his students founded the Harvard Negotiation Project in 1979 and interviewed people who were known to be skilled negotiators to understand their techniques.

His activity has been worldwide, including peace trials, hostage crises, diplomatic negotiations, and commercial and legal negotiations and disputes.

As of 2005, Fisher published several follow-ups on his Harvard concept. In Beyond Reason , he shared much of his negotiating experience around the world, from his involvement in the Iran hostage-taking negotiations, his advisory role in assisting Jamil Mahuad , President of Ecuador (1998-2000), to resolving one longstanding international border disputes.
