Roger L. Beck

Roger Lyne Beck (* 1937 in England ) is an English classical philologist .

Life

He studied at Oxford University (BA) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . There he obtained his PhD in 1971 with the thesis Meter and sense in Homeric verse . He held numerous leadership positions for the University of Toronto Mississauga , including Acting Principal (1991–1992), Associate Dean (1985–1991), Vice-Principal Academic (1986–1991) and Chairman of the Erindale College Council, the official UTM management committee. He was also a member of the University's Governing Council, including the Chair of the Academic Board.

His research interests are religion in the Roman Empire, particularly the Mithraic cult , the cognitive study of religion, ancient astrology and astronomy, the ancient novel, particularly the works of Titus Petronius and Apuleius .
