Théodore Gérard (born December 9, 1829 in Ghent , † October 29, 1902 in Laken ) was a Belgian genre and portrait painter as well as an etcher and art teacher.

Gérard studied in Ghent at the Académie royale des beaux-arts de Gand with Théodore-Joseph Canneel .

After graduating, he started working as a painter and decorator in Ghent. In 1857 he moved to Brussels, where he made numerous copies of the works of other painters. From 1858 he undertook several study trips to the countries of Europe ( Moselle , Alsace , Austria , Prussia , Black Forest , Bavaria , Swabia and northeastern Switzerland ) before finally turning to genre painting. In addition to the oil paintings, he also created watercolors. He was influenced by German and Austrian genre painting.

He participated in many art exhibitions and received medals in Philadelphia in 1870, London in 1871, Vienna in 1873 and Brussels in 1875. He was appointed professor at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles .
