Roger Rolhion (born November 4, 1909 in Montpellier , † November 30, 1977 ) was a French football player and coach .

As a player in the club

The 178 cm tall defender Rolhion had been part of the first team of SO Montpellier since the 1927/28 season . Because there was no national league at that time, he played with his teammates in a regional amateur league, but also appeared in the France-wide cup competition on a national level. This made it into the national cup final in 1929 , in which Rolhion was part of the first team and thanks to a 2-0 win against FC Sète, won the trophy. He also took part in the 1931 Cup final with Montpellier, but failed due to a 3-0 defeat by Club Français Paris on a possible repetition of the success.

In 1932, Division 1 was a nationwide first league founded, which also brought professional football to life in France. Rolhion was qualified with Montpellier for this and was called up when his team played the first game ever in the newly created league on September 11, 1932 in a 2-0 win over Olympique Alès . He then remained the undisputed regular player in a team that was initially placed in mid-table before it had to accept relegation at the end of the 1934/35 season. At this point he turned his back on the club.

With his new employer, the second division AS Saint-Étienne , he was also set and made his contribution to promotion to the top division in 1938. The team had a successful year, but in 1939 regular play was stopped due to the start of the Second World War . Rolhion was called up as a soldier and was taken prisoner of war. In 1942 he was able to continue his career and took part for Saint-Étienne in the unofficial hosting of the championship. When no club teams were admitted during the 1943/44 season, he joined the ÉF Lyon-Lyonnais association. At the end of the season, the then 34-year-old retired from professional football after 85 first division games with five goals and 94 second division games with one goal and other unofficial first division games.

As an amateur, he then worked for AS Aix and a club from Ganges for some time .

National team

Rolhion was 21 years old when he played for the first time in the jersey of the French national team on March 15, 1931 in a 1-0 win over Germany . He was then considered for further friendlies and stood in a 0: 4 against Czechoslovakia on June 10, 1933 for the fourth and last time in an international match. He was not appointed to the squad for the 1934 World Cup .

Coaching career

The coaching career of the former professional began in 1954 when he was given responsibility for the first division team Olympique Marseille at the age of 44 . With this he was always in the middle of the table until he lost his post in March 1956. In 1968 he returned to Montpellier in his new role as coach. He landed with the team in 1969 on 17th of 21 places in the table and lost his position in the same year because the club was temporarily dissolved. This also ended his career as a coach.
