Roland Hoffmann (classical philologist)

Roland Hoffmann (* 1955 in Altena - Evingsen ) is a German classical philologist with a focus on Latin linguistics .

Career

Hoffmann completed his studies in Protestant theology and classical philology in Bielefeld and Mainz. Since 1983 he has been teaching as a teacher for the subjects Latin, Greek, Protestant religion and ethics.

In 1994 he received his doctorate in classical philology at the University of Mainz with a thesis on the grammaticalization of Latin verbal phrases (published by Peter Lang Verlag in Frankfurt a. M. 1997). In 1995 he took part in the International Colloquia on Latin Linguistics for the first time, and has been a regular participant since 2001. Sometimes also at colloquia on Vulgar and Late Latin and other congresses with their own contributions to Latin linguistics. In the 1990s he belonged to the Mainz linguists circle founded by Walter Bisang , which was able to attract speakers such as Bernard Comrie , William Croft , William A. Foley , Paul J. Hopper , Hans-Jürgen Sasse and Barbara Wotjak . Hoffmann is u. a. Member of the Evaluation Committee of the International Colloquia on Latin Linguistics. He is co-editor of the “Study Books on Latin Linguistics” at Buske-Verlag in Hamburg. Hoffmann later held published congress lectures a. a. at the universities of Heidelberg, Bologna, Oxford, Innsbruck, Uppsala, Paris (Université IV "Sorbonne"), Rome (Università di Roma Tre), Toulouse and Budapest. There is a collaboration with Harm Pinkster and Caroline Kroon , Amsterdam, with Jingling Wang , Frankfurt a. M. as well as with Dirk Panhuis , Leuven (Belgium).

  • Research contributions on the Latin morphosyntax and valence of the verb, word order, linguistic analysis of the Vulgate, language typology of Latin and the history of grammar.
  • Numerous reviews, essays (partly in Latin, English and French), a book on Latin verbal periphrases and two translations of an introduction to the Latin language and a study grammar from Dutch and English. Further book projects on the typology of Latin, the Vulgate and Priscian's syntax (Inst. 17-18) are planned.
  • In the German-speaking world she is one of the leading representatives of Latin linguistics, the linguistic description and analysis of Latin, including newer linguistic methods, theories and models. Prefers a functional-typological approach.
