Barbara Wotjak

Barbara Wotjak (born November 13, 1940 in Reblin ; † April 7, 2017 ) was a German linguist . As a professor for German as a foreign language , she mainly taught at the Herder Institute at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig and at the Philological Faculty of the University of Leipzig . Her main areas of work included lexicology , lexicography and phraseology .

Life

Barbara Wotjak was born on November 13, 1940 in Reblin. In 1945 he was resettled from Pomerania via Mecklenburg to Thuringia . After attending primary school in Hainrode and Eisenach , she passed her Abitur at the Luther High School in Eisenach in 1959. From 1959 to 1961 she completed a teaching degree for French-German at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig. She then studied until 1964 Romance (French, Portuguese) and German . After completing her diploma, she worked for one year as an editorial assistant and speaker in the Latin America (Brazil) section at Radio Berlin International . From 1965 to 1976 Barbara Wotjak worked as a university teacher at the Herder Institute of the University of Leipzig in the field of aspirant training and during this time passed an additional educational university exam. From 1976 to 1980, Gerhard Helbig was a regular trainee . She also accompanied her husband, Gerd Wotjak , to Cuba, where she taught Spanish and German at the University of Havana and the University of Education for Foreign Languages ​​in Havana.

In 1981 she did her doctorate in Dr. phil. in linguistics at the Karl-Marx-Universität Leipzig on the subject of "Investigations into German verbs of conveyance taking into account selected Spanish equivalents" with the predicate magna cum laude. The habilitation followed in 1989 with the thesis "On the structure of content and expression of verbal phraseolexeme in system and text". For this font she was awarded the Wilhelm Gottfried Leibniz Prize of the Karl Marx University in Leipzig in recognition of outstanding achievements in training and research. In 1990 she obtained the Venia legendi for the field of German as a foreign language / linguistics , whereupon she taught as a lecturer at the Herder Institute until 1992 and also held seminars at the University of Saarbrücken . In the years from 1991 to 1998 and 2001 to 2003, Barbara Wotjak was appointed deputy director of the Herder Institute at the University of Leipzig, after previously working as a research assistant and senior assistant. There she headed the department for advanced training / courses in the field of German as a foreign language. From 1992 until her retirement in 2006, she held a professorship for German as a foreign language specializing in lexicology at the Philological Faculty of the University of Leipzig. Furthermore, as part of the university renewal, she was a member of personnel, selection and appointment committees at the University of Leipzig. In addition to her teaching and research responsibilities, she also managed projects funded by the Foreign Office for many years . From 1998 to 2001 and 2003 to 2005 Barbara Wotjak was the managing director of the Herder Institute. From 2008 she was deputy editor-in-chief of the magazine "Deutsch als Fremdsprache".
