Gerd Wotjak

Gerd Wotjak (born January 12, 1942 in Pürstein ) is a German linguist and translation scholar . From 1980 to 1990 he taught the Spanish language and from 1990 to 2007 Romance languages ​​and translation studies at the University of Leipzig .

Live and act

Gerd Wotjak graduated from high school in Quedlinburg in 1959 . From 1959 to 1964 he studied Romance languages, French, Spanish and Romanian at the University of Leipzig. He received his PhD in 1968 at Albrecht Neubert Dr. phil. with a dissertation on the topic of "Investigations into the structure of meaning: a contribution to the subject and method of modern meaning research with special consideration of semantic constituent analysis". In 1975 he received his doctorate with Wolfgang Lorenz Albrecht Neubert and Werner Bahner Dr. sc. phil. for Romance Linguistics and Translation Studies with the topic “On the relationship between image and meaning. Considerations in the border area between epistemology and semantics ”. From 1964 to 1967 he worked at the Interpreting Institute of the University of Leipzig as a research candidate and then from 1967 to 1968 as a research assistant. From 1968 to 1975 he worked as a senior research assistant and from 1975 to 1980 as a lecturer at the University of Leipzig before he was appointed professor in the same year. From 1980 to 1992 Wotjak was a full professor for Spanish language in the Theoretical and Applied Linguistics section of the Karl Marx University in Leipzig. Appointed professor for Romance Linguistics and Translation Studies in 1992, he taught at the Institute for Applied Linguistics and Translatology of the Philological Faculty of Leipzig University until 2007 . From 1992 to 1993 he was the founding director of the Institute for Romance Studies. In 1994 he was appointed dean of the newly founded philological faculty; he held this office until 1996.

Wotjak initiated the International Conferences on Hispanic Linguistics , which take place at regular intervals, and the International Leipzig Working Conferences on Romance-German and intra-Romance language comparison. His broad range of research included lexical semantics , valence theory , metalexicography , the integrative description of the communicative potential of lexical units, aspects of phraseology with a focus on the semantics of idiomatic phrases and the specifics of non-idiomatic word combinations as well as theoretical and practical questions of a contrastive description of language. In addition, Wotjak dealt with translatological questions and advocated the consideration of the basic postulates of the Leipzig School of Translation Studies. He examined translational competency, paying particular attention to the relationships between culture, cognition and language, and presented reflections on translation tools and translation processes and techniques. With around 300 articles in national and international journals, most of which are written in Spanish, he has worked primarily in the Hispanic world, but has also made a contribution to the current scientific discussion among Romance, German and general linguists and translatologists theoretical problems. In addition, as co-director of the newly launched specialist publication Lingüística Iberoamericana and as the editor of numerous anthologies and the 100-volume series “Studies on Romance Linguistics and Intercultural Communication” , Wotjak has made a special contribution to the dissemination of Hispanic studies, including numerous dissertations. His meritorious work for Spanish was honored in 2005 by the University of Salamanca with the award of the internationally known Premio "Elio Antonio de Nebrija".

He was married to the linguist Barbara Wotjak .
