Werner Bahner (born June 18, 1927 in Neuwiese im Erzgebirge , † July 14, 2019 in Leipzig ) was a German Romance studies and philologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Stollberg , he studied Romance languages ​​in Leipzig . In 1950 he laid the first state examination and attained a doctorate to Dr. phil. with the topic "Studies on the concept of the people in French literature (15th - 18th centuries)" . In 1955 his habilitation followed with the thesis "Theories about the origin of the Spanish language in the Siglo de Oro" . In the same year he became a member of the SED . On March 1, 1960 he was appointed full professor and appointed director of the Romance Institute at Leipzig University. In 1965 he was elected member of the German Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Berlin , to which he moved in the same year. From 1965 to 1969 he was director of the Institute for Romance Languages ​​and Culture at the Berlin Academy of Sciences. He then worked as deputy director or division manager at the Central Institute for the History of Literature at the Academy until 1977 and then until 1989 as Director of the Central Institute for Linguistics. Most recently, he headed a research group for the history of linguistics at the aforementioned central institute until the end of 1991.

In 1965 he was elected a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig and in 1966 a full member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin. From October 1980 to April 1991 he was President of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig. Linked to this was the function of Vice President of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR until June 30, 1990.
