Rólas is located south of São Tomé on the middle map (the outline of the island is incorrectly drawn so that the island appears to be south of the equator) |
Rólas ( pt. Ilhéu das Rólas ), also Ilhéu Gago Coutinho , is a stratovolcanic island in the Gulf of Guinea , which belongs to the island state of São Tomé and Príncipe . It is located directly on the equator almost 1,100 meters south of the island of São Tomé , from which it is separated by the Canal das Rôlas and from where it can be reached by boat.
geography
Rólas is about 3 km² and is inhabited by about 200 people who live from tourism. In the north of the island there is a beach resort and the São Francisco Village settlement . In the very south of the island there are several furnas that resemble small geysers . In the middle of the island is an old lighthouse that is still in operation. Like most of the island, this lies south of the equator . On the northern edge, a world map mosaic with brass strips marks the exact position of the latitude “zero”.
