Rolf Kern (born January 20, 1976 in Winterthur ) is a former Swiss floorball player and current trainer who coaches the men's team at HC Rychenberg Winterthur and the Swiss women's national team.

Career

As a player

Kern went through all the junior stations of HC Rychenberg Winterthur before he played for the first team in Winterthur for the first time in 1993. After five successful years, Kern left his youth club for Graubünden. He played for Rot-Weiss Chur for six years and has matured into a top performer in the Bündner squad. In addition to a pronounced striker behavior, he is also extremely good on the ball and strong in two fights. With Chur, he won four championships and the Swiss Cup four times in six years. After his last championship in 2004, he left the series champion due to his professional activity and moved back to Winterthur. He spent four more years in Winterthur before ending his active career in 2008 at the age of 32.

He made 30 international matches for the Swiss national team .

As a trainer

Red Ants Rychenberg and German national team

In 2008, Kern was introduced as the trainer of the Red Ants Winterthur . During his four years with the Red Ants, he and his team became Swiss champions once, cup winners twice and took part in the European Cup three times.

On August 3, 2011, he was hired by Germany's national coach, Philippe Soutter , as assistant coach. Soutter had known Kern since his time at HC Rychenberg Winterthur, where he was Kern's coach. The team qualified for the 2012 World Cup in Switzerland. There the national team reached fourth place as an outsider.

HC Rychenberg Winterthur

On February 8, 2012, HC Rychenberg Winterthur announced that Kern will succeed the outgoing Rychenberg coach Daniel Costa. The first season as head coach ended his team in seventh place after regular time. This meant that his team was eligible for the playoffs. The first opponent was the second placed SV Wiler-Ersigen . The playoff series lasted seven games and ended with an overall result of 4-3 for the Winterthur team, who surprisingly threw the reigning Swiss champions out of the playoffs. In the semifinals, however, his team had to admit defeat with 1-4.

In its second season , the HCR qualified only because of the better goal difference as the eighth club for the playoffs. As eighth-placed team, the HCR had to win the qualification, the Tigers Langnau . The first four games all went in favor of the Tigers Langnau, which meant that the season for Winterthur was over.

The qualification of the 2014/15 season ended Rychenberg in seventh place. In the playoffs, the team from Kern had to compete with the runner-up UHC Alligator Malans . The team lost their first game in the Lust gym in Maienfeld 6-3. Three days later his team was able to beat the alligators in Winterthur with 16-5. In the remaining three games, however, the Winterthur-based company could not use the momentum and had to admit defeat to UHC Alligator Malans. The series ended with 4-1 for the Maienfelder.

Rychenberg Winterthur strengthened the team for the 2015/16 season with talented youngsters. With 46 points Rychenberg qualified fourth for the playoffs. As in 2013/14, the opponents were the Tigers Langnau. Kern led the team with four wins in the semifinals, where they were eliminated against the eventual champions at Grasshopper Club Zurich . During his time as head coach, Kern was able to integrate many talents into the first team squad.

Swiss national team

On January 20, 2016, his 40th birthday, the Swiss floorball association swiss unihockey announced that Kern would take over the women's national team from Sascha Brendler with immediate effect . Kern will continue to be the head coach of HC Rychenberg Winterthur alongside the national team.
