Rolf Mülhaupt

Rolf Mülhaupt (born September 13, 1954 in Waldshut-Tiengen ) is a German chemist ( macromolecular chemistry ). He is director of the Institute for Macromolecular Chemistry, the Freiburg Materials Research Center and the Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies (FIT) at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg .

Mülhaupt visited the Upper Rhine-Gymnasium in Waldshut and studied from 1973 Chemistry at the University of Freiburg with a diploma in 1978 and in 1981 at the ETH Zurich in P. Pino doctorate (Stereospecific polymerization of 1-olefins with base-modified MgCl 2 / TiCl 4 / AlR 3 Catalysts). He was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation. After completing his doctorate, he went to DuPont Central Research and Development in Wilmington (Delaware) and in 1985 he became group leader in the plastics and additives department at Ciba AG in Marly FR . In 1989 he became professor for macromolecular chemistry at the University of Freiburg.

He researches the production, characterization and processing of novel polymers and polymer composite materials. He works on an interdisciplinary basis at his institute and seeks close collaboration with industry. Mülhaupt itself holds a number of patents. He works on polymer systems that are inspired by biology and react to changes in the environment with changes in material properties.

Since 1992 he has also been the managing director of the Freiburg Materials Research Center (FMF).

In 2009 he received the Hermann Staudinger Prize . He is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
