Rolf Opitz (entrepreneur)

Rolf Opitz (born October 24, 1942 ; † June 25, 2005 in Berlin ) is considered the initiator of the Green Citadel in Magdeburg .

Life

Opitz initially took up the profession of electrician and worked in the Magdeburg heavy machinery construction combine SKET . In 1978 Opitz was elected chairman of the AWG "Ernst Thälmann" , a Magdeburg housing cooperative that was later renamed the "Stadt Magdeburg von 1954" housing cooperative. He held this office for 26 years until December 2004.

Since 1995 he has been campaigning for the construction of a building designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser , the Green Citadel, in Magdeburg's old town . Despite resistance and concerns, which ignited primarily at the intended location near the historic building on Magdeburg Cathedral Square , he succeeded in getting the building done. He was able to witness the topping-out ceremony on March 4, 2005. However, he died of cancer before the building was completed.

In his role, he was also responsible for other architecturally striking buildings and renovations in Magdeburg. So for the 16-storey building at Zollstrasse 1, the new buildings at Haus Skorpion in Magdeburg-Reform and the outdoor facilities of the Birkenhof in Magdeburg-Neu Olvenstedt .
