Roma Kungsgård
Roma Kungsgård is a mansion and crown estate (literally in Swedish kungsgård - German royal court ) in the central part of the Swedish island of Gotland . Statens fastighetsverk Roma has managed Kungsgård and the Roma Monastery since 1993 . Roma Kungsgård is a popular destination and every summer there are theatrical performances in the church ruins.
The main building of the courtyard was built in the 1730s, but Gotlands Thing was located here as early as the 12th century and the Roma monastery was built here by the Cistercian monks in 1164 . Around 1531 during the Reformation in Denmark, to which Gotland belonged at the time, the monastery was closed and ownership passed to the royal sovereign. In connection with the Peace of Brömsebro in 1645 Gotland became Swedish again and the Roma Kungsgård farm was administered as a fief ( Swedish löneförmån ) by the sovereigns ( Swedish landshövdingar ) until 1832 .
The sea hero and admiral Gustaf von Psilander became the first sovereign of the island and he had a wooden residence built in the 1720s. Some of the monastery buildings were given other functions, for example as a grain house ( Swedish kornhus ) and feed silo ( Swedish foderhus ), while others were left to decay. After a fire, Psilander's house was torn down and his successor Johan Didrik Grönhagen had a main building with two wings made of plastered limestone built in 1733, which is still preserved today. He had the building material taken from the ruins of the monastery. The broken mansard roof was added during the renovation in 1789.
The last sovereign on Roma Kungsgård was Jacob Cederström, after 1832 the estate was leased. The first tenant had little success, but model farming was resumed by the legendary large farmer Oskar Myhrman, who ran the farm from 1849 to 1907. Kungsgård was taken over by the military in 1937. During the Second World War a military airfield was built near Roma , for which part of the avenues leading to the courtyard were cut down, and the buildings were used for military purposes. The armed forces evacuated Kungsgård in 1988.
Today Kungsgård consists of around 300 hectares of land (mostly arable land), which are leased together with the farm buildings. The tenant cultivates crops and raises livestock.
