Roman Rabl (born June 11, 1991 in St. Johann in Tirol ) is an Austrian mono-skier . He starts in all alpine skiing competitions ( downhill , super-G , super-combination , giant slalom and slalom ). At the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi , he won three bronze medals. A year later, at the 2015 World Championships in Panorama (Canada), Rabl won the silver medal in both downhill and super combined.

Career

Due to a skiing accident on January 10, 2007, Roman Rabl, who lives in Söll in Tyrol, is paraplegic from the 12th thoracic vertebra and has been in a wheelchair ever since. It was already clear to him in the hospital that he wanted to ski again. In November of the same year of his accident, he completed his first mono ski course.

Athletic career

In November 2007 he sat in monoski for the first time, a year later he started in his first European Cup race in December 2008 in the youth team of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV). The following year he was already part of the European Cup team.

Due to his performance, he was included in the B-squad the following season. At the World Championships in Sestriere 2011 he finished 5th in the slalom. Roman Rabl made his World Cup debut in the 2011/2012 season. The first World Cup podium in slalom followed with a third place in La Molina in Spain and the first European Cup victory in Spindleruv Mlyn in Czech Republic.

In the 2012/2013 season, Roman Rabl switched to a Japanese monoski . This change paid off and he achieved his first World Cup victory in giant slalom in St. Moritz on January 13, 2013. In the same season, further podium places in the World Cup followed. He also won the overall European Cup and became world champion with the team in La Molina .

At the Paralympic Games in Sochi in 2014, he won three bronze medals in the disciplines of slalom, super combined and giant slalom. In addition, he took 2nd place in the overall World Cup ranking and won the overall World Cup ranking in the super combination. He was also able to defend the overall European Cup standings.

At the 2015 World Championships in Panorama, Canada, he was able to achieve two second places, both in the downhill and in the super combination.
