Roman Stepwieser received an honorary doctorate from the Romanian Ovidius University in Constanta in 2008.

Roman Wolfgang Stepwieser (born May 30, 1947 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian physicist and ao. Retired university professor at the Institute for Ion Physics and Applied Physics at the Leopold Franzens University Innsbruck . There he has headed the Innsbruck experimental plasma physics group since 1979 (formerly Q-machine plasma laboratory).

Life

In 1973, Roman Stepwieser wrote his dissertation on "Investigations into the propagation of ultrasound in rigid pipes filled with viscous liquids" with Josef Kolb at the former physical institute of the University of Innsbruck. In 1981 he received the Max Kade Fellowship at the Physics Department of the University of California in Irvine , California, USA. At the invitation of the Japan Society for Promoting Science (JSPS for short) he lived in Japan for several months in 1981 and 2003 and works at the Institute for Electronic Engineering at Tohoku University in Sendai.

In 1990 he completed his habilitation in the field of experimental plasma physics and has been an associate since 1996. University professor at the University of Innsbruck. From 2002 to 2004, Roman Stepwieser was also President of the Innsbruck Mathematical-Physical Society.

Act

In the early 1970s, Roman Stepwieser worked closely with the Alexandru-Ioan-Cuza University (Iaşi, Romania) and also stayed there regularly for research purposes. Despite the deterioration in the political situation in the 1980s, intensive exchanges continued. Roman Stepwieser was honored with an honorary professorship and an honorary doctorate for his services.

Roman Stepwieser is currently leading the investigation

  • of radial transport and fluctuations in the peripheral areas of various magnetically confined plasmas (especially of fusion plasmas ),
  • of non-linear potential structures, waves and instabilities in limited plasma systems
  • self-organization in different plasmas

and the development of electron-emitting plasma probes for toroidal fusion experiments as well

  • research into new plasma sources.

Awards

Roman Stepwieser became

2003 Honorary Professor at the Alexandru-Ioan-Cuza University (Iaşi, Romania) and

2008 Doctor honoris causa from Ovidius University (Constanţa, Romania).

2013 Fellow of the American Physical Society for his outstanding experimental contributions to the physical understanding of structures and instabilities in ionized gases and to the development of new measurement methods.

2015 Doctor honoris causa at the Alexandru-Ioan-Cuza University (Iaşi, Romania).
