Josef Kolb

Josef Kolb (born March 27, 1914 in Lauterach , Vorarlberg , † September 25, 1994 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian physicist and rector of the Leopold Franzens University in Innsbruck .

Life

Josef Kolb graduated from the Oberrealschule in Dornbirn in 1935 (today the Bundesgymnasium Dornbirn ). After completing a year of voluntary service in the army, he studied physics at the University of Innsbruck. Due to an accident as a harvest worker in 1939, he was not called up for military service. In 1941 he received his doctorate in Innsbruck with a thesis on the "measurement of space charge in workplaces". Until 1945 he worked as a physicist in the Navy.

Immediately after the end of the Second World War, Kolb became a research assistant at the Physics Institute of the University of Innsbruck. From 1952 to 1954 he completed a study and research stay on topics in ultrasound physics at Brown University , the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Michigan State University . After his return he completed his habilitation in 1955 at the Philosophical Faculty in Innsbruck and was involved in interdisciplinary issues and the history of physics. In 1958 Josef Kolb was appointed Associate Professor. In 1963 he was appointed full university professor for experimental physics . In 1969/70 he was dean of the Philosophical Faculty with the departments of the natural and human sciences. In 1970/71 he was rector of the Leopold Franzens University in Innsbruck.

Kolb was involved in a variety of ways. He was the chairman of the Austrian Physical Society (ÖPG) (1963/64) and was a member of the board of the Mathematical-Physical Society in Innsbruck and the Natural Science-Medical Association. He was also a board member of the University Association. Since 1936 he was a member of the Catholic university association K.Ö.HV Leopoldina Innsbruck in the ÖCV .
