Romuald II

Romuald II († 731/732) was Duke of Benevento from 706 to 731/732 .

Life

Romuald was the son of dux Gisulf I and his wife Winiperga. After Gisulf's death in 706, his son Romuald II succeeded him as dux von Benevento. Around 715 Romuald married Gumperga, the daughter of Aurona, a sister of King Liutprand , with whom he had the son Gisulf II . He later married Ranigunda, a daughter of the dux Gaiduald of Brexia ( Brescia ).

Lombards from Benevento conquered the Byzantine Cumae under Romuald II in 717 , but were driven out again after some time by John, the Byzantine dux of Naples, and Theodimus, the rector of Campania, on the intervention of Pope Gregory II . The Pope paid Romuald 70 pounds of gold, which he had offered him for the evacuation of the fort, and thus bought the benevolence of his dangerous neighbor. Other historians hold that the "premium" was paid to John. In any case, the monastery of Monte Cassino 718 could be repopulated after it had been abandoned for over 100 years. The monastery of San Vinzenzo al Volturno was founded by Tato, Taso and Paldo.

When Romuald died in 731 or 732, a follow-up dispute broke out in which the usurper Audelahis initially asserted himself against Gisulf II.
