The Romualdo Cave is located on the Istrian peninsula in Croatia , at the end of the Limski Canal , about ten kilometers east of Vrsar on the Adriatic Sea . It is about 105 meters long, about 97 meters above sea level with halls up to six meters high. It is named after the former Benedictine and later saint Romualdo of Ravenna , who came to the area around the year 1000 and settled in the cave as a hermit for two years in 1002 .
The Romualdo Cave has been scientifically explored since 1978. Bones of more than 40, partly extinct, Ice Age animal species were found. Evidence could be cave bear , cave lion and cave hyena . Today a colony of around 3000 Myotis bats live in the cave. As of July 2015 there are still 200 bats. During the Stone Age , Neanderthals also lived in the cave. Some of the walls inside are painted with pictures .
The cave is currently closed to visitors.
