Ron Galella (* 1931 in the Bronx ) is a paparazzo who helped create the sensational press and elevated it to an art form.

Galella was born to Italian immigrants. His father was a carpenter. His career began as a photographer with the Air Force . In his early twenties he moved to Los Angeles and trained as a photojournalist. In his spare time he photographed the arriving stars and starlets at film premieres and sold the pictures to National Enquirer or Fotoplay .

Galella shot his most famous photo, the “windblown Jackie”, out of a moving taxi: the black and white photo shows the beginning of a smile on Jackie Kennedy's face, which is blown by her hair . Ron Galella generally rates this moment as the most magical moment for people. Hence, the paparazzo calls this photo his Mona Lisa .

In June 1973, Marlon Brando knocked Ron Galella in his lower incisors and broke his jaw because the actor did not want to be photographed on the street without sunglasses. Marlon Brando injured his hand, which later had to be sewn in the hospital. After this incident, Galella often wore an American football helmet as protection during his work . In 1974 Paul Schmulbach photographed Galella, wearing the helmet, following Marlon Brando with a camera in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York.

Jackie Kennedy sued Galella. After a first court case in 1972, the constantly ambushing Galella was no longer allowed to approach her under 25 feet. In a second judgment in 1982, Ron Galella had to promise not to photograph Jacqueline Kennedy for the rest of her life, because he had broken the first edition four times. Andy Warhol, on the other hand, adored the photographer. Liz Taylor used eight of his pictures for her autobiography.
