Ron Woodroof

Ronald "Ron" Dickson Woodroof (born February 3, 1950 in Dallas , Texas ; † September 12, 1992 there ) was an American entrepreneur who founded the so-called Dallas Buyer's Club in March 1988 during the AIDS epidemic . After contracting the HI virus in 1985 , he founded the group as part of an effort to get and distribute drugs to treat HIV at a time when the disease was little known.

He sued the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over a ban on Peptide T , a drug he used.

biography

Woodroof was born on February 3, 1950 in Dallas, Texas, to Garland Odell Woodroof (1917-1983) and Willie Mae Hughes (1917-1996).

His first marriage was to Mary Etta Pybus on June 28, 1969 in Dallas, from which a daughter emerged. The marriage was divorced on March 23, 1972. On May 6, 1972, he remarried in Dallas to a woman named Rory S. Flynn. They divorced on May 21, 1973. He then married Brenda Shari Robin on October 4, 1982 in Lubbock. That marriage ended in divorce on March 4, 1986 after Woodroof was diagnosed with HIV.

Dallas Buyer's Club

After Woodroof suffered from the side effects of the AIDS drug AZT at the time, he looked for other drugs that could further extend his life. He found dietary supplements and drugs that were not FDA approved for use in the United States that he found helpful in relieving his symptoms. He founded the so-called Dallas Buyer's Club in 1988 as the front for distributing these drugs and other substances to AIDS patients.

Seven years after being diagnosed with HIV, Ron Woodroof died on September 12, 1992 of AIDS-related pneumonia . Woodroof's life was the basis of the 2013 film Dallas Buyers Club . He was portrayed in the film by Matthew McConaughey , who won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Woodroof.
