Roque Ceruti (* around 1683 in Milan ; † December 6, 1760 in Lima ) was a Peruvian composer from Italy.

Life

Roque Ceruti was born in Milan around 1683 and received his musical training there. In 1707 he came to Peru and in the following year became court conductor at the court of the viceroy of Peru, Manuel de Oms y Santa Pau . In 1708 he composed the musical comedy El mejor escudo de Perseo with Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco, based on a libretto by the viceroy. After his death he was taken over into the service of the successor Carmine Nicolás Caraccioli .

When Caraccioli traveled to Italy in 1717, Ceruti lost his job and went to Trujillo as Kapellmeister of the cathedral in 1721 , where he was active as a composer of sacred music and made a special contribution to building up the children's choir. After the death of Torrejón y Velasco in 1728 he was his successor as Kapellmeister at the cathedral in Lima . Because of his deteriorating health, his pupil José de Orejón y Aparicio took over the organist position here in 1742 . In 1743 the Viceroy awarded him the title of musico extraordinario . Ceruti's compositions include numerous Villancico for church use.
