Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco

Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco (* 23. December 1644 in Villarrobledo ; † 23. April 1728 in Lima ) was a Spanish in Peru acting bandmaster and composer.

Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco was in the service of Pedro Antonio Fernández de Castro , "conde de Lemos" , from 1658 and followed him to Lima when he became viceroy in 1667. In a short time he gained an important position at the court of the Spanish viceroy. From 1676 he worked as Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Lima . In 1680 he wrote the music for the ceremony of beatification of Archbishop Toribio de Mogrovejo , in 1701 he conducted the music for the funeral of King Charles II and shortly after that for the 18th birthday of his successor Philip V. In the same year his Zarzuela La púrpura de la rosa based on a text by Calderón de la Barca , which is considered to be the first musical stage work to be written in the New World.

The Albacete Conservatory is named after Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco.
