Rosalía Mera

Rosalía Mera Goyenechea (born January 28, 1944 in A Coruña ; † August 15, 2013 ibid) was a Spanish textile entrepreneur and self -made billionaire . The richest woman in Spain at the time of her death was the founder of the Zara fashion chain and the Inditex group with her then husband Amancio Ortega in the 1970s and 1980s .

Life

Mera left school at the age of eleven and initially worked as a seamstress.

In 1972 she founded the Zara fashion chain with her husband Amancio Ortega . In 1985 the entrepreneurs combined their textile activities in the Inditex group. It held a stake of more than 30 percent in the Room Mate hotel chain. Mera was also the President of the Paideia Foundation.

The Forbes magazine estimated her fortune at 4.7 billion euros and that her ex-husband Ortega to 43 billion euros. In 2012 she was ranked 54th on The World's 100 Most Powerful Women list and in 2013 she was ranked 66th.

In addition to her business activities, she also became known for her social commitment. She declared her solidarity with the protest movement of the "outraged" and publicly expressed criticism of the planned tightening of the Spanish abortion law.

On August 14, 2013, she suffered a stroke while on vacation with her daughter in Menorca . She was transferred from there to a hospital in A Coruña , where she died the following day. She was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Eulalia von Liáns in Oleiros ( A Coruña ).
