The Rosalia was built under hull number 274 at Cantieri Navali del Tirreno e Riuniti in Ancona and was launched on October 14, 1972. After delivery to the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, the ship began the liner service from Villa San Giovanni to Messina in December 1973. Since 2012, the Rosalia has been managed by the state shipping company Bluvia.

The ship remained in service for the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane for a good 37 years before it was decommissioned in January 2011 and sold to Turkey for scrapping in May 2012 after a year-long layover. On May 22, 2012, the Rosalia arrived at the Aliağa demolition shipyard under the name Lia .

The Rosalia had two identical sister ships: the Iginia , which was commissioned in 1969, remained in service until it was scrapped in 2015, the Sibari , which was commissioned in 1970, was demolished in 2009.
