Rose (scholarly family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rose family was a scholarly family in the Brandenburg region , whose Berlin branch was known for pharmacists and scientists in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The family originally comes from Eastern Franconia . The oldest known representatives include the Mittenwald provost and inspector Simon Rose and his son Christian Rose (1609–1667), who had been the rector of the Latin School in Neuruppin since 1632. His son Christian Rose (1664–1729) was a businessman in Neuruppin, as were his two grandsons, Valentin Rose (1695–1752) and Johann Rose (1700–1767).

Johann's son Valentin Rose (1736–1771) was the first descendant to live in Berlin. In 1761 he bought the Zum Weißen Schwan pharmacy , which has remained in the family for three generations. The apprentices who received their training at the Zum Weißen Schwan pharmacy included the chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth (apprentice from 1770) and the writer Theodor Fontane (apprentice from 1836). In 1845 Wilhelm Rose sold the pharmacy due to increasing competition from other companies.
