history

The rose garden was laid out together with the magnificent buildings on what was then Stalinallee (today: Karl-Marx-Allee) in the early 1950s. A protest by construction workers began at the park on June 16, 1953, which led to a nationwide popular uprising on June 17, 1953 . There were strikes, demonstrations and protests throughout the GDR , which were connected with political and economic demands. This uprising was put down by the Soviet army . In 1979 a pergola was erected around half of the park . The park has been redesigned again and again over the years and was last restored in 1994.

In the 2015 and 2016 training years, apprentices from the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Lichtenberg green space authorities renewed parts of the park as part of a training project (from June 22, 2015): The border edging was relocated in sections and paths, benches, pergolas and lawns were redesigned. From October 2015 there was new planting with roses and perennials . Some work had to be repeated and in the meantime there were work breaks for vocational school purposes. The trainees received instructions from an experienced trainer from Lichtenberg. They worked according to plans made by engineers from Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The total construction period lasted until autumn 2016, the total costs totaled 40 to 50,000 euros for materials, plants and the construction site equipment. The costs were borne by the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, spread over two years. This happened as part of the International Garden Exhibition 2017 (IGA) which took place in Marzahn.

On the 50th anniversary of the uprising in 2003, a joint action by DGB, IG BAU Berlin, IG Metall Berlin-Brandenburg-Sachsen, Bürgerbüro e. V., Förderverein Karl-Marx-Allee e. V. and the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg District Office, an aluminum plaque has been attached, which refers to the history of the park. The following is written on the board: "We want to be free people" / The construction workers began their protest against the SED government's increase in standards on June 16, 1953. / Your action led to a nationwide popular uprising . The plaque has been damaged several times since it was installed. A plaque was put up in November 2004 and stolen by strangers on February 8, 2005 and finally renewed again.
