The Basilica of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary ( English Basilica of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary ) is a Roman Catholic church in Karumathampatti , Tamil Nadu , India . The pilgrimage church of the Diocese of Coimbatore bears the title of a minor basilica . Great numbers of people come to worship Our Lady of the Rosary .

history

The sanctuary of Karumathampatty was a well-known place of pilgrimage as early as 1640, from which the mission in Coimbatore district was led until 1850 before it was moved to its capital, Coimbatore . St. Johannes de Britto is said to have visited the shrine as a missionary in 1676. The original chapel was destroyed by the soldiers of the Rajah of Mysore in 1684, but rebuilt soon afterwards. The church was destroyed again by Tipu Sultan except for the entrance in 1784 and rebuilt in 1803. The bell tower was built in 1840, the main altar dates from 1908.

On July 22, 2019, Pope Francis granted the church the status of minor basilica. The solemn proclamation by Archbishop George Antonysamy took place on October 6, 2019 as part of the Rosary Festival, which is celebrated every year on the first Sunday in October.
