history

On the initiative of Captain Juan de las Nieves Andrade, a hermitage was built as a mud hut in Maracaibo on 1686, which was consecrated to John of God . In 1709 a laundress discovered the image of the Virgin of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá , a copy from the Rosary Basilica of Chiquinquirá in Colombia, during an apparition of Mary . When it was transferred to the cathedral, the painting was brought to the hermitage early. In 1724, instead of the clay building, construction began on a larger church, which was consecrated in 1732. In 1770 a church tower was added. Various renovations followed and in 1806 the parish was founded. In 1858, José de Jesús Romero redesigned the church, which was renamed the Parish of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá and St. John of God .

In 1920 the church was founded by Pope Benedict XV. raised to the Basilica minor, which was then architecturally redesigned. The image of the Virgin Mary of Chiquinquirá was crowned in 1942 , the gold crown weighs 10 kilograms.

The three-aisled basilica has a double tower facade with a high gable. The high altar is in the choir, numerous niches are dedicated to various saints. In 2004 a monument to the Chinita was inaugurated in front of the basilica , the work was designed and executed by the architect Ali Namazi and built by the governor of Zulia Manuel Rosales.
