Rosetta Stone was a British pop rock band that existed from 1976 to 1982.

history

The band started in 1972 when Ian Mitchell and Damian McKee founded the band Albatross in Downpatrick , Northern Ireland . When Damian's brothers Terry and Colin joined the band, they first called themselves Bang and from 1974 Young City Stars . After all, they released their first single that year and supported the Bay City Rollers . In 1976 Mitchell joined the Rollers on short notice as a replacement guitarist, while Andy LeGear joined the Young City Stars. Mitchell returned that same year, the band was renamed Rosetta Stone (after a piece of music by Barry Blue ) and Rollers manager Tam Paton took on them.

The quintet got a record deal with Private Stock Records and in 1978 their debut album Rosetta Stone was released . They were particularly successful in Asia, but also in Germany with their single (If Paradise Is) Half as Nice , a cover version of Amen Corner's number one hit , which reached number 20. The second single Sheila , a cover version of the 1962 Tommy Roe hit, was another hit.

In 1979 Mitchell left the band again after disputes and the second album Caught in the Act could no longer build on the success. Substitute Paul Lerwill stayed only three years before he was replaced by Enda Walsh. A final EP, Hiding from Love , was released in 1982, but a short time later the band broke up.

Around the turn of the millennium there were several reunion concerts, some with all of the original members.
