Roslyn O. Silver (* 1946 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American lawyer and current federal judge who has served in the United States District Court for the District of Arizona since 1994 . She became Chief Judge of the District Court in 2011 .

Roslyn O. Silver was born Roslyn O. Moore in Phoenix in 1946. She received a BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1968 and a Juris Doctor from Arizona State University College of Law in 1971 . From 1971 to 1972 she was the law clerk to Judge Lorna Lockwood at the Arizona Supreme Court . She then had her own law firm in Phoenix from 1972 to 1974.

Silver worked in the sequence from 1974 to 1976 as a consultant and forensic scientist for the Education Division of the Native American Rights Fund of the Navajo Nation . She was an associate employment consultant for Greyhound Corporation from 1976 to 1978. Silver then returned to her Phoenix firm in 1978 before becoming an attorney for the Equal Opportunity Commission in 1979 . She was assistant to the United States Attorney for the Arizona District from 1980 to 1984. Silver became assistant to the Attorney General of Arizona in 1984 and served there until she returned to the US Attorney's office in 1986. In 1989 she was promoted to head of the crime department.

Silver was nominated for a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Arizona by President Bill Clinton on September 14, 1994, vacated by Earl H. Carroll's move to senior status. She was ratified by the United States Senate on October 7, 1994 , and took office on October 11, 1994. Silver became the presiding judge in 2011 following the fatal shooting of then Chief Judge John McCarthy Roll during the assassination attempt on Congressman Gabrielle Giffords .
