John McCarthy Roll

John McCarthy Roll (born February 8, 1947 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , †  January 8, 2011 in Casas Adobes , Arizona ) was an American federal judge .

Life

Roll studied at the University of Arizona , the James E. Rogers College of Law, and the University of Virginia . From 1972 to 1973 he served on the Pima County Superior Court . He then served as associate attorney for Tucson , Arizona. From 1973 to 1980 he was a district attorney in the county administration of Pima County and from 1980 to 1987 Assistant United States Attorney for Arizona.

In 1991, US President George Bush nominated him to succeed Alfredo Chavez Marquez in the Arizona Federal District Court . The Senate confirmed the election on November 22 of this year . Since 2006 he was the longest serving judge at the court.

On January 8, 2011, John Roll was shot from behind by the 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner during the assassination attempt on Gabrielle Giffords in the Tucson suburb of Casas Adobes when he tried to cover a 65-year-old Giffords employee against the assassin.
