Rossdorf became famous when the St. Marien monastery was moved here from Mansfeld in 1234.

After the pillage of Eisleben and the surrounding villages by Landgrave Friedrich III of Thuringia in 1362, many residents left the village and moved to Eisleben in the so-called "New Village", after the city was divided into quarters it was called "Neuendorfer Viertel".

It is believed that the village was abandoned due to severe water shortages. This was also the reason why the St. Marien monastery under Gertrud von Hackeborn was relocated to Helfta , rich in lakes , in 1258 .
