The rust-bellied Newtonia ( Newtonia brunneicauda ) is a songbird from the family of the Vangawurger (Vangidae) endemic to Madagascar .
features
This small vanga strangler is about 12 cm tall, weighs 7-14 g and is more similar to warblers . The top is gray-brown with a monochrome head, dark beak and pale eye. The iris is white. The wings are a little more intense brown, the underside, legs and beak underside are pale orange.
behavior
Rust-bellied Newtonians feed on small insects including spiders, beetles, and flies. They look for food in tree tops, in family groups and together with timalia . The breeding season is between July and March.
distribution and habitat
This species is native to the tropical and subtropical rainforest up to 1600 m, often also in the thorn forest.
The following subspecies can be distinguished:
- N. b. brunneicauda ( Newton , 1863) nominate form , in the forested parts of Madagascar, especially in central Madagascar.
- N. b. monticola Solomon Islands , 1934 in the Ankaratra Mountains, slightly darker gray-olive-brown on the top, more intense brown on the underside and larger.

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
