The Roach Moenkhausia ( Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae ) is a species of the real tetras (Characidae) family. It becomes up to seven centimeters long and lives in South America , in the river basin of the Rio Paranaíba , in Paraguay and Argentina .

Aquaristics

Keeping the animals in aquariums does not present any particular difficulties. Although the waters in which the animals are native tend to have soft, slightly to strongly acidic and nutrient-poor water ( black water ), Roach Moenkhausia can also cope with harder and less acidic water. In general, the following information on husbandry can be found:

  • a pH of 5.5 to 8.5
  • a GH value of 5 ° to 30 ° d
  • a temperature of 22 to 26 ° C

Since the peaceful and easy to socialize fish is often kept in community aquariums with other (preferably) South American fish, the care instructions known in this context also apply. Humic acids brought into the water through peat or bog roots promote the well-being of the animals. A yellowish to amber coloration of the (clear) water corresponds to the natural environment and allows the coloration of the fish to come into its own. As with many tetras, a (at least partial) floating plant cover is recommended to shelter the animals and to shade the aquarium. A dark substrate is often recommended.

An essential requirement for the care of Roach Moenkhausia is that keeping fewer than 8 animals should be avoided. This fill strength marks the minimum number required. In smaller groups, in pairs or individually, the animals can not live out their typical social behavior. The animals are very active and need sufficient swimming space (in the upper and middle aquarium area). As a rule, the aquarium length should not be less than 80 cm.

Roach Moenkhausia eat all typical food animals, e.g. B. white, black and red mosquito larvae , water fleas . Plant foods are also taken. Experience has shown that aquarium plants leave the animals largely undisturbed. Only individual bites of young plant shoots and the feeding of some of the hundreds of small duckweed ( Lemna minor ) have been observed.

Sex differences can only be determined with sufficient certainty in adult animals: the female animals have a significantly rounder abdomen.
